Uncut Gems Review

By: Grace Conley

“And the Oscar for most improved goes to – Adam Sandler!”

Uncut Gems is a blast. This movie has been hyped for a while and I knew it was gonna be good because the Safdie brothers knew what they’re doing. But what I was most curious about, was Adam Sandler’s performance. He has stated that if he doesn’t win an Oscar for this movie he is gonna make the worst movie ever. Little does he know, he already did that with Jack and Jill – and it looks like we’re getting a sequel. He is good in this movie but not Oscar good. Definitely his best work but not the best. He shows little to no range and is just kinda loud and obnoxious the whole time with a few moments of vulnerability. But besides that, this movie rocks! Get it!

It’s a thrilling fast-paced crime drama that takes place in real-time. It has a very similar format (and ending) to the Safdie Brothers other film, Good Time. They are masters at their own format, and while similar, this movie never feels boring or unoriginal.

Uncut Gems has so much color and life that it really hooks you in and makes you care for the characters.

This movie and Knives Out are in the same realm to me. Movies that are incredibly well made but are only meant to entertain. I like Uncut Gems slightly more than Knives Out because it feels more grounded and personal to one story – but it’s a similar vibe.

I had a great time watching this movie despite it being two hours and fourteen minutes, and a good thirty of those minutes were devoted to Adam Sandler watching basketball. I highly recommend this movie, it’s a non stop thrill ride with my favorite score of the year and a unique perspective.
