“This movie takes place on Halloween, why the heck did it come out in August?”

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (2019) is a fine, but fun movie. It’s not very special or original. It’s cliche, but it does being cliche pretty well. It’s engaging and entertaining throughout with some mild scares, but nothing too crazy as it is PG.

This movie takes place in the late 60s, which I did not know. It added a nice twist to the setting that I wasn’t expecting, and it actually has some interesting commentary sprinkled throughout about the time period and the Vietnam draft.

My personal favorite part about this movie is the immaculate recreations of the monsters from the original book. They are amazing to look at and just incredibly impressive considering that they are made almost entirely out of practical effects. My favorites were this smiling looking dude and the scare crow.

The level of fright in this movie varies. At some points, the pacing is great and I’m on the edge of my seat and in other places, it is lackluster. Specifically, there is a scene in a hallway that I think had the potential to be really frightening but it just fell through.

All of the actors in this movie are fine, no one is an outlier. Although that kid Ethan from Euphoria is in this movie and he’s playing like a bully jock which was a weird twist but it worked.

This movie goes really hard on the classic teal and orange color correction. So much so that everyone’s skin is super orange throughout the movie and it’s kinda distracting.

Also, the really weird thing about this movie is that they leave it off with this super weird ending that is very explicitly setting itself up for a sequel and I can’t imagine there will be a sequel in the future.

In conclusion, this movie is really fun, and a perfect movie to see when you want to be a little scared and engaged for 1 hour and 47 minutes. It would really be a perfect Halloween time movie, and I can see myself watching it again with a group of friends, along with a bowl of candy.

Verdict

7.2/10
