The Rock + Jason Statham = Kickass Action Fun
Hobbs and Shaw is a spinoff film, from the Fast and the Furious series starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. The film is about the two teaming up with each other to take down Brixton (Idris Elba), a former special forces soldier that is now a cyber-genetic villain part of the Etheon Dark underground organization who threatens the very existence of humanity.
The movie was very comedic. The relationship between The Rock and Jason Statham is phenomenal. The jokes were really on point and the You can obviously tell that the two share great chemistry together and that they work really well on the big screen. We saw this back in 2017 in the film, The Fate of the Furious. where the two worked together to help Dominick Torretto (played by Vin Diesel) to save his family. But this is the first time, The Rock and Statham are the stars of the film and they did not disappoint.
The film also introduces us to a new character, Hattie Shaw that is played by Vanessa Kirby. Hattie Shaw is the sister of Deckard Shaw played by Statham. She is a badass, as well as the mediator of separating the lawman Hobbs and the loner Shaw from ripping each other heads off, as well as controlling their alpha male egos while achieving their objectives.
The action in the film was fantastic. If you like gunfights, car chases, and fighting, this is the right film for you. Both Hobbs and Shaw have different fighting styles. Hobbs the muscular lawman is slow but powerful, whilst Shaw is quick fighting and agile. The two different fighting styles makes the film fun and exciting.
A big surprise was Hattie Shaw. Hattie shares the same type of fighting from her brother Deckard. Kirby does a great job and you can tell that she worked hard while filming. From quick fighting skills to great acting, Kirby definitely fits the part and does well playing the part as Shaw’s sister. Kirby is a rising star in the series and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Hattie Shaw.
Idris Elba should definitely be in more action films. Elba does a great villain and with his machine body, it shows some great fighting scenes. The machine and technology inside the body of Elba shows us (the audience) what Elba is doing while slowing down time. I think it was a great addition into the film. The best part of the film was when both The Rock and Statham were both fighting Elba. The two vs the one badass dude makes it a delight to watch.
The plot was not bad. It can be predictable at times, but without giving too much away, there were a couple of surprises, as well as cameos that made the film even more enjoyable. I love the different locations the film incorporated. Also, stay in your seats until the end of the credits to see not 1,2,3 but 4 after credit scenes. It definitely added more laughter to the film and what the series has in the future in the upcoming sequels.
The stunning Eiza Gonzalez was only in the film for a short time and it was a shame because I wanted to see more of her and her relationship with Deckard Shaw. The short scenes with her make us very curious as to what their relationship was like prior to Shaw’s entrance into the Fast and the Furious series.
Overall, the film was a great spinoff from the Fast and the Furious series. There is no street racing (of course not) but some scenes of fast cars racing through different cities still don’t make up for the lack of fast cars racing like we all love seeing. But hey it’s a spinoff from Fast and the Furious series, and we have Fast and the Furious 9 to look forward to. The fantastic comedy and a lot of action scenes with the two makes up for it and was a blast. I look forward to seeing the dynamic duo together again and I want to see more action from these two, as well as from Vanessa Kirby.
