“Seth Rogen reliving his glory days with a baby Superbad.”

I know I compare movies to Superbad a lot, but this movie is literally pre-teen Superbad. From a T. Max as Evan, Thor is Seth and Lucas is Mclovin, the film is about a group of dudes going on a wacky adventure to get to the party of their lives, so the skinny white kid can get the girl.

They meet cops along the way as they try to acquire alcohol, and they learn a lesson about growing up by the end of it. Even though this is blatantly inspired by another movie, Good Boys does bring its own qualities to the table. The best, of course, is the perspective and age of the main characters. Middle schoolers are a perfect demographic for this setup, and it really served in favor of this movie. It is incredibly hilarious, petty much non stop laughs all the way through.

There is some very awkward timing a few times during the film. For example, the exposition is really awkward, really fast and a joke about a character’s sister doesn’t really land. But after that hump, the movie runs pretty smoothly.

Another standout of this movie is the cast, the three little boys are amazing, they all bring something very unique to the table. Jacob Tremblay is a fan favorite, but my personal favorite performance was from Lucas played by Keith L. Williams. This kid is hysterical, I love him.

Beyond the great laughs, and talented cast this movie doesn’t have a lot of offer, it attempts to make a point about growing up and friendships, but it’s not nearly as impactful as I would have hoped, or as it was in Superbad.

The cinematography is bland and spotty at times, but I think what this movie really needed was a better director. If the film was placed in the right hands, this movie could have been incredible. Not that it wasn’t good. There was just so much more potential. I would definitely see it though, it’s worth a watch just for the laughs.

Verdict

7.9/10
